Protect the panel from lightning

Class B / C / D and combined surge arresters, data line protection, neutral-earth regulator, rack cabinet socket and machine protection panel. Specification, panel installation, commissioning and the first call when something fails are all the same company.

The same system is not the same job in a factory, a hospital and a marina. Pick your facility type and we'll send you the scope of work we do for that type, along with a tailored quote.

Does this sound like you?

Something happens on the grid overnight, and by morning three cards, one drive and four cameras are gone.

Situation 01

Lightning never hit the building, the equipment failed anyway

Lightning does not have to strike the building: a nearby discharge, or a capacitor bank switching in, induces voltage on long cable runs.

Situation 02

There is an arrester in the panel, the device still burnt out

The residual voltage the arrester lets through (Up) must stay below the equipment's withstand (Uw); otherwise the arrester is fitted and the equipment still fails.

Situation 03

A line leaving the building takes out the switch

Cameras, access points and network runs outside the building carry induced voltage to the switch; in-line RJ45 and PoE protection cuts that path.

Scope

Protection is not one device but a staged chain

Class B (Type 1) at the main panel, class C (Type 2) at sub-panels, class D (Type 3) in front of sensitive equipment, and a separate arrester on the data line. Even on jobs where we don't do the installation we supply surge arresters, neutral-earth regulators, rack cabinet sockets and machine protection panels, and we select the model to match the application.

  • AC surge arrester — Class B (Type 1), C (Type 2), D (Type 3) and combined models, two- and four-pole
  • DC and AC-DC surge arrester — for photovoltaic strings, solar farms and telecom supply lines
  • Data line surge arrester — in-line RJ45 and PoE protection
  • Neutral-earth regulator — single-phase, three-phase and mobile
  • Rack cabinet socket — surge-protected socket blocks for server and IT cabinets
  • Machine protection panel — combined protection for a three-phase machine supply

Answered before you ask

The two questions surge protection raises most

How do you decide which model suits our panel?

The choice is made from five inputs, not from a guess:

  • The earthing system (TN-S, TN-C-S, TT) — this determines whether neutral-earth protection is needed at all, and the device's continuous operating voltage (Uc).
  • Phase count — single- or three-phase; the 2-pole / 4-pole choice.
  • Where the panel sits in the chain — building intake B (Type 1), sub-distribution C (Type 2), in front of sensitive equipment D (Type 3). The standard framework is IEC 61643-11.
  • The impulse withstand of the protected equipment — the residual voltage the arrester lets through (Up) must stay below the equipment's withstand (Uw); otherwise the arrester is fitted and the equipment still fails.
  • Connection and back-up protection — keeping the connecting leads short and fitting an appropriate fuse ahead of the arrester is what the IEC 60364-5-53 installation rules require.

We can read all of this from your panel's single-line diagram, or from a photograph of it.

If something fails, do we deal with the manufacturer or with you?

With us. A distributorship is more than being allowed to sell the product: choosing the right model, mounting it in the panel, commissioning it and answering for it when it fails are all part of the scope.

The product warranty is the manufacturer's and the workmanship warranty is ours; we run both from one point of contact.
